  8. Q:  After power-up, my cube tries to boot from my hard disk, but fails with one of the following messages: "SCSI Error,"  "Bad Disk," or "Bad Network. "  In each of these cases, though, my computer will boot from the ROM monitor if I type the "b" command.\

A:  Someone may have altered your boot parameters to boot extended diagnostics.  Diagnostics is a testing program used by authorized NeXT Service Centers to test the various hardware components.  When your cube is booting extended diagnostics, it searches the boot device for the Diagnostics program.  If it doesn't find it, it notifies you with misleading errors such as "Bad Disk."  \

  12. If this is the case, you need to change your boot parameters so the system won't boot extended diagnostics.  Get to the NMI mini-monitor (by pressing the backquote/tilde key on the numeric keypad while holding down both the left and right Command keys) and then type "halt" command to the

  14. \b0  prompt.  This puts you into the ROM monitor.  Type "p" to inspect and modify your boot parameters.  Hitting return for any prompt will leave that parameter unchanged.  When you are prompted with  "boot extended diagnostics," be sure to specify "no".\
